What should you do if you are unwilling to leave your dental surgery and become a student again?

Well, the answer is quite simple. You could start learning orthodontics with the help of orthodontic courses, lectures, and seminars. Some of them are available online, while others are hands-on brace courses. That is actually the type of service that we provide to our clients who are willing to expand their knowledge and become better dental clinicians.

How should you gain experience in orthodontic care if you are an absolute beginner?

Every one of us starts from scratch. You should start with the basics to implement braces treatment into your daily clinical care. They include understanding the biomechanics, clinical diagnosis, and different treatment options available for treating various types of malocclusions.

Case selection is crucial, as you might like to limit your practice to mild and moderate cases, referring the severe malocclusions to a specialist. Implementing those basic rules into your clinical routine should allow you to execute the orthodontic treatment in a predictable and straightforward manner, which would consequently mean more satisfied patients under your care.

Is self-directed learning a good decision in orthodontics?

Every dentist’s ambition is to become a better version of himself or herself, ultimately leading to a more well-rounded care provider. I put myself into a group of dentists willing to understand the subject and expand their expertise.

That is one of the main reasons I started teaching the subject – to be the best I can be. I genuinely believe that the inner desire for knowledge makes a difference in our professional growth and development.

How do you avoid the optimal trap in orthodontics?

There is an increased demand for aesthetic removable orthodontic appliances among patients. Fortunately for clinicians, plenty of companies offer removable clear aligners. That is a fantastic product and is the future of orthodontics.

So, how could something go wrong with these orthodontic appliances produced by companies that have invested a fortune into research? Well, the answer is quite simple. The company aims to sell you the product rather than treat your patient.

Believe it or not, teeth do not always move as they are intended to in the computer simulation. You are sorely mistaken if you think someone generating a computer treatment planning cares about your reputation.

It is up to you as a clinician to critically assess the biomechanics and decide whether a desired end result is feasible. That is why I always tell my patients that If I can’t meet their expectations with aligners, I will switch to esthetic braces to get the job done.

I hope you will be able to learn new and valuable information here and consequently have more satisfied orthodontic patients under your care.
